Detroit’s Beacon for a More Perfect Union

While human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable, the work to help the child, preserve the family, and strengthen the community shall remain at the forefront of Franklin-Wright Settlements as a mission and mantra.  The 2017 calendar year was ripe with challenges for our agency who has maintained its light through 137-years of societal changes and community ebbs and flows.  As Detroit fights to reclaim its lost glory through new investment and development in the city, the narrative for the poor remains dismal. The gap between rich and poor continues to widen, and the services offered by Franklin-Wright to seniors, families and youth are more critical today than they have ever been.

I am happy to report that Franklin-Wright Settlements has developed strategic partnerships with other stakeholders to lessen the sting of poverty in the areas of utility assistance, adequate and healthy food, senior citizen support services, emotional and academic youth development, and employment.

Franklin-Wright is an active partner with DTE Energy to assist families in need of utility assistance. We also work with families who have lost power, providing them with food, shelter, and other disaster relief. To provide healthy food to distressed families, we have collaborated with Forgotten Harvest to help the homeless and the hungry.

We continue to affect the lives of our youth in a variety of positive ways. Along with the City of Detroit, we are partners in a massive youth employment initiative while continuing academic enrichment efforts, post-secondary institution preparation through an annual college tour and after-school program.

Our efforts have borne much fruit. Our new frontier is to tackle the issue of adequate and affordable housing as we seek to find resolution to this problem.

We cannot do everything, but together we can do anything! Your support of Franklin-Wright Settlements is deeply appreciated. We will continue to pursue all avenues to create a better quality of life for those who suffer.

Let us keep the faith!
